Day 25: S for Social Media

I must tell you, I had the worst nightmare last night,
I would be understating if I said it gave me a fright.
If I weren't crying, I would even say it was comical,
When my digital world suddenly became physical.

Everything I saw on the internet,
Suddenly appeared on a real world set.
It all started with a small action,
When a friend posed and said, give me a reaction.

Next thing I knew, I was just having a drink,
When an acquaintance pushed her photos to me and said tell me what you think.
I politely replied, I'm sorry, I don't know you well.
She said, don't worry it's not for you, it's just to make me feel swell!

Annoyed and hungry, I walked into a shop,
I browsed many types of chips, but liked nothing, so I stop.
The real horror started when I step outside,
And found the salesman from the store walking right beside.

Everywhere I went, he started following me,
Saying, I know you want chips, why won't you buy from me?
Leave me alone, I don't want chips any more, I sob.
He replied, can't help it missy, retargeting is my job.

Enough is enough, I loudly cried.
You, @#*#@#$ *##@*, a friend replied.
Shocked, I said, you never abused, what happened to you?
She replied, abusing online is easier, you should try it too!

That's it, I said, I can't do this, I am done.
I want to deactivate, this is no longer fun.
But then, random long lost friends started coming there,
Saying, are you sure? We have memories to share.

Thankfully, just when things were getting bad,
My dear sweet alarm rang, I am so glad.
For the first time in my life, I woke without snoozing,
Elated to be back in the physical world of my choosing.

  1. The salesman following you everywhere is creepy. ... I didn't even look at that on this device! - Erin (http://www.erinpenn.com/blog/)

  2. Definitely a scary prospect to wake up in a Facebook or Twitter real world; Instagram photos choking everyone. Sad that abusing is easy online.

  3. Just imagine the hate and extremist posts making rounds in social media becoming real..sooo scary!

Them 90s Things - 1 - iTV Music Channel

Starting a random series of all things from a 90s childhood, just so I have a record of these memories for posterity. Do you remember a channel called iTV?  The 1999 Cricket World Cup was when our extremely middle-class, government quarters colony rose to the challenge of cable tv. Till then, we were happily adjusting our antennas and watching wholesome family entertainment on the two channels of DD1 and DD2. Then came the cable wale bhaiya, with his fancy earring, a few TV guides stacked under his arms along with long ropes of cable, promising unlimited entertainment for the entire colony. And just like that, we all got lured. Cable TV bought with it a lot of changes, many of which I assume will get covered in this series. But, today's post is about 1 particular memory which every 90s kid can relate to. A huge letter I revolving on the TV in anticipation of a new song being chosen. Yep. The iTV generation. Not MTv. It was all about iTV. I still don't know what that channel was...

Drumrolls and All That

In crass Hindi, this moment would have been aptly defined as "Laut ke buddhu, ghar ko aaye".  Exact translation would mount to "Fools return home" and that's what this post is. So, after taking a break from work, doing a second Masters, getting a job in Singapore and moving countries, I am back on the blog.  Who would have thunk? An year back, I had no idea this is what I would be doing in an year. But then again, do we know what we will be doing an year from now?  Lesson learnt. No planning, no guessing.  Just keep exploring, keep doing new things, keep learning, keep meeting new people. Things will happen. Trust. Like a fool (who returned home!) So, while I discover this part of my life, Singapore, I thought I need the blog more than the blog needs me. Because moving countries is not in the least as glamorous as it sounds.  There's the whole deal with selling all belongings which you have hoarded lovingly over the years. A...
