Day 33: On writing

Ok, so now is when I conclude my blogathon.

Because of some logistical challenges of posting on LinkedIn too, I ended up falling short of a few posts. But, now I am actually done with all posts, so yay!

For all those who read or commented, heartfelt thank you. I hope I entertained you in some way.

So, what are my thoughts at the end of 33 days of writing?

  • Writing everyday is so hard. But, it also gives a weird high. When I finish a new post and hit publish at 12 in the night, I felt like I accomplished something and I felt nice. I hope to continue my run in this month too.
  • I am now a  poet! I have never written a poem in my life. I have blogged for 10 years, written more than 250 articles, but never a poem. It started as a joke on the second night when I didn't have time to write something long. And somewhere around the 5th day, subconsciously, I decided I am writing a poem everyday. And just like that, I am now 24 poems old.
  • This one is hard to write but I think I am going to go ahead and say it anyway. I tried so hard to keep my blog world alive. I commented on my favorite bloggers posts. I read almost everyone I know who was doing or trying to do the challenge. And yet, I could get noone to come and read me. It hurt because it felt like I was putting in a lot of effort and it was going unnoticed. To be fair, at some point, I got annoyed and I started posting on LinkedIn and Twitter too. But, there's always that weird love for the blog world. We all started together so many years back. Would have been nice to have atleast some of my blog friends encourage me. Not to say I would stop blogging or reading or commenting. I love how some of you write and I enjoy interacting with youu all. So, that's never going to change! Just that this world runs on reciprocity. And it would be nice to have that :)

I actually really enjoyed pushing myself this time. I am hoping I can continue this spree into May and write regularly. Maybe poems. Maybe some other format. Who knows!

Till then,
Ciao.
Have a good weekend!

  1. Preeti! People are reading! Ok, maybe not everyday as it was possible before (for some reason) but sometimes at a go. But yes, it is no longer how easy it used to be to read and comment without fail, you remember the early days? But don't stop writing - I have stopped giving a thought to comments altogether, the huge difference between the hits and the comments should tell you that what you are writing is being read :) And I do agree, the world needs reciprocity, makes the journey more fun.

Do keep writing! I am going to try to.

    1. Yeah! I think about the old days a lot! Remember, we used to compete to comment first. :)
I was hoping the blogathon would get everyone out in the blog world, but I guess that was optimistic. I am just glad everyone is writing more than what we did a few months back. That's good enough :)

  2. Preeti,

I have only recently discovered your blog, but ever since I am a regular here. I like your insightful observations about people's behaviour, especially in the digital medium. I also like how you express them through your poems, with a touch of irony, sarcasm and humour. Congratulations on finishing the blogathon and discovering the poet in you!

I have looked forward to all your posts and I am delighted to know that there will be more of them. We all started blogging years back, when it was quite the rage. Most people have dropped off, but I find this habit to be as enriching as it ever was, even today.

I share your frustration in how people no longer engage with blogs as they once used to. I miss the interesting discussions we used to have around each other's posts. Kudos to people like you who keep the flag flying.

It is true that blogging has become more scarce today. But you know better than most people the value that is manifest in scarcity :)

    1. Hey Anupam!

Like I said before, hats off to your perseverance! I don't know how you do it. Write every single day. I am really enjoying reading your posts. :)

Agree on the blog world. Guess we have to just accept it. Looking forward to exploring new mediums now! :)

  3. People are sick of drinking. Investors are betting on the 'sober curious'

Startup investors and entrepreneurs are hoping to cater to the "sober curious," people who for the sake of wellness are reevaluating their relationships with alcohol and how often they drink.

While it's investing in new alcohol-free companies, Silicon Valley is also reexamining its own relationship with alcohol.

After coordinated walkouts by employees and contractors in November over its handling of sexual harassment accusations, Google announced a number of changes to its work culture, including cutting down on excessive drinking. "Harassment is never acceptable and alcohol is never an excuse. But one of the most common factors among the harassment complaints made today at Google is that the perpetrator had been drinking (~20% of cases)," the company said, adding that leaders will be charged with discouraging workers from excessive drinking.

    Making not drinking hip

Kin isn't the only new brand trying to lessen the stigma of drinking a non-alcoholic beverage that is getting attention from startup investors.

  4. Preeks, I am really sorry. I did catch up with your posts a couple of times in-between though I simply did not have the energy to comment. This is because it takes at least 3 attempts to post a comment in blogger and I have to prove that I am not a robot everytime. I have probably still not also figured out how to get automatic updates to check posts in blogger. WordPress has an app and the feed automatically updates posts.

  5. Dear Preeks, now that I have got a confirmation from blogger of my identity as human and had commented on 17 posts without making my attention seeking 4 year old mad, request you to take up reading those comments as a home work assignment. Class dismissed,😀

Them 90s Things - 1 - iTV Music Channel

Starting a random series of all things from a 90s childhood, just so I have a record of these memories for posterity. Do you remember a channel called iTV?  The 1999 Cricket World Cup was when our extremely middle-class, government quarters colony rose to the challenge of cable tv. Till then, we were happily adjusting our antennas and watching wholesome family entertainment on the two channels of DD1 and DD2. Then came the cable wale bhaiya, with his fancy earring, a few TV guides stacked under his arms along with long ropes of cable, promising unlimited entertainment for the entire colony. And just like that, we all got lured. Cable TV bought with it a lot of changes, many of which I assume will get covered in this series. But, today's post is about 1 particular memory which every 90s kid can relate to. A huge letter I revolving on the TV in anticipation of a new song being chosen. Yep. The iTV generation. Not MTv. It was all about iTV. I still don't know what that channel was

Drumrolls and All That

In crass Hindi, this moment would have been aptly defined as "Laut ke buddhu, ghar ko aaye".  Exact translation would mount to "Fools return home" and that's what this post is. So, after taking a break from work, doing a second Masters, getting a job in Singapore and moving countries, I am back on the blog.  Who would have thunk? An year back, I had no idea this is what I would be doing in an year. But then again, do we know what we will be doing an year from now?  Lesson learnt. No planning, no guessing.  Just keep exploring, keep doing new things, keep learning, keep meeting new people. Things will happen. Trust. Like a fool (who returned home!) So, while I discover this part of my life, Singapore, I thought I need the blog more than the blog needs me. Because moving countries is not in the least as glamorous as it sounds.  There's the whole deal with selling all belongings which you have hoarded lovingly over the years. A

Letters to the Upparwalla!

(Wow! BlogAdda made my day! :) ) Prologue: I have been SO so SO so lazy, busy and blank, that I stopped writing posts altogether. But then, on reflection, I thought I owed this one to the unseen forces above. Hence, this post! LETTER #1 To The Gods Above, 1, "All Roads Lead to Heaven" Road, Heaven - 000000 15.06.2010 From Un Faithful Earthling Somewhere on Earth - Does the pin code matter?
